What a piece of work!
Yes, happily, I am. A living, breathing, work of art. In 1986, I won
National’s “Best Tattooed Female” for the exquisite, Oriental
style bodysuit of tattoos that I wear. A beauty contest, but different
than my younger days of Miss Rehoboth Beach in the Miss
Delaware pageant!
My real education started after college, when my art ability surfaced
and I found myself amidst a community of other free-spirited,
creative, tattoo artists. I apprenticed, the old fashioned way;
mopping floors, making needles, and drawing lots of designs. There
weren’t too many other women tattooing twenty years ago. It was, and
still is, difficult to secure a good shop location because of the
acceptance level of this occupation.
I loved the art form, but seemed to always have to defend myself from
its reputation of sailors, bad girls, and side shows. Thankfully, I
was raised to know that we all make a difference and can change the
world – one person and one opinion at a time. My title for best in
the world got the attention of magazines and newspapers. I was very
selective in what I said and who I let photograph me. I lived in Ft
Myers, Florida, at the time, and the local paper, the News Press and
the Orlando, Sentinel both did headline stories. The award-winning
staff of the Miami Herald did an exclusive for the Sunday paper. What
fun!
As I pursued my
career and built my clientele at the studio, I launched my own
publicity campaign. For the next tattoo convention, I did posters and
postcards of myself. Women hadn’t approached their own tattoo art
quite so publicly up until this and it quickly led to several video
and book projects with other artists and photographers. Ancient Art
Tattoo was doing well in Ft. Myers and I decided to sell the
business and move back to my hometown of Rehoboth Beach.
In 1994, I opened the
Ancient Art Tattoo Studio in Delaware. I am proud to have served
on the Body Art Task Force for the Delaware Health Department.
The tattoo artists and health department officials combined their
efforts and our state is now regulated, protecting both the artist and
the consumer. On a visit to Ft. Myers, a tattoo artist I knew agreed
to tattoo my eyeliner for me and give a couple of us some instruction
on cosmetic tattooing. I have enjoyed that permanent makeup
since the 80’s and am glad it has become so popular. Through the
years, I have stayed involved with the Society of Professional
Cosmetic Professionals and I am a licensed CPCP, Certified
Permanent Cosmetic Professional.
Although I still love to tattoo and will continue to create wonderful
designs and perform the cosmetics, I would like to share my new
exciting business with everyone. I feel that
I have found something that will take the sting out of inflation and
help me retire very comfortably!
This state-of-the-art, new company will help me educate people about
their own health and what they can do to improve it and also help them
establish a very lucrative business, if they should be so inclined. Of
course, it’s network marketing! Is there anything else out there
that’s better than word of mouth? I don’t think so. My studio was
built on that exclusively!
